This page contains downloadable, scanned images of the final printing: “10th printing, December 1972, with corrections” of Abramowitz and Stegun. The complete book (1060 pages including the front matter) is freely downloadable from this web page in three formats: as a multipage, binarised, deskewed TIFF file at 300 pixels per inch with all connected components (i.e. connected ink blots) smaller than the smallest correct dot removed (54MBytes), as a similarly processed and formatted document...

Winchester College headmaster W. F. Oakeshott discovered a previously unknown manuscript copy of the work in June 1934, during the cataloging of the college's library. Newspaper accounts announced that what Caxton had published in 1485 was not exactly what Malory had written. Oakeshott published “The Finding of the Manuscript” in 1963, chronicling the initial event and his realization that “this indeed was Malory,” with “startling evidence of revision” in the Caxton edition. It is...

This global image map of Mars has a resolution of 256 pixels/degree (scale approximately 231 m/pixel at the equator). The colorized mosaic was completed by NASA AMES which warped the original Viking colorized mosaic and blended over the lastest black/white Mars Digital Image Model (MDIM 2.1). The positional accuracy of features in MDIM 2.1 is estimated to be roughly one pixel (200 m), compared to 3 km for MDIM 2.0 released in 2001 and >6 km for MDIM 1.0 released in 1991. In addition to...

In late 1940 Alan Turing wrote a report describing the methods he and his colleagues at Bletchley Park had used to break into the German Enigma cipher systems. At Bletchley it was known as 'the Prof's Book.' A copy of this handbook was at last released from secrecy by the American National Security Agency in April 1996, under the title 'Turing's Treatise on the Enigma.' Subsequently, a much better original copy was released by the (British) National Archives, box HW 25/3. This also revealed a...

Paper on Statistics of Repetitions is an informal report in which Turing works out the best statistical means of testing whether two cipher messages use the same key in parts of the message. This was very important in the exploitation of such messages at Bletchley Park.

The Applications of Probability to Cryptography demonstrates that Turing was determined to apply rigorous probability analysis to a wide range of cryptanalytic problems of the day. A particular highlight is where Turing uses life expectancy to examine conditional probability. The associated example, Hitler is now of age 52 , adds piquancy and suggests that the paper was written between April 1941 and April 1942. Bletchley Park's output of decrypts was almost certainly enabled by the techniques...

Name: user Password: pass From the GUI Gallery : GlobalView 2.1, released in 1996, is the descendant of the Xerox Star ViewPoint desktop software. The Xerox Star was the 1981 commercial successor to the Xerox Alto. The Xerox Star and GlobalView were primarily sold as a document processing system although they could do much more. GlobalView runs on an IBM-PC compatible under Microsoft Windows (3.1, 95, 98, possibly ME but not NT, 2000, or XP due to the use of .386 VXDs). For all practical...
